Tragedy mars Carencro celebration

A 23-year-old man was killed in a float accident shortly after the end of the Carencro Mardi Gras parade Saturday afternoon.

The man fell off the front of a float that had just participated in the parade, said Lt. Craig Stansbury, spokesman for the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office. The float then struck the man, and he died from his injuries a short time later.

The accident happened around 1:25 p.m. Saturday in the 1000 block of Gendarme Road. Stansbury said no other floats or vehicles were involved.

The victim's name was not immediately released, pending notification of family members.

During the parade, a deputy with the Lafayette City Marshal's office was injured after he swerved his four-wheeler to avoid hitting a small child.

Carencro Mayor Glenn Brasseaux said Roy Payne fell head-first off of the four-wheeler and suffered a cut on his head and complained of pain in one of his hips.

"He was down for a while, but he was more concerned about the kid," Brasseaux said, adding that Payne also is supervisor with Acadian Ambulance Service.

An ambulance responded to the scene, but Payne did not want immediate medical attention. He planned to go to a hospital later as a precaution, Brasseaux said.

"He was OK. Everybody around there was clapping for him, and the little boy came up and hugged him," Brasseaux said.
